Median Income - Family Households

Median (midpoint) income for family households, including those with and without children. Family households include two or more individuals related by birth, marriage or adoption. Family income is the preferred measure of economic wellbeing in university communities like Columbia and Boone County, since the majority of the student population resides in non-family households. Household income (i.e. including both family and non-family households) is artificially low due to the student population.

Occupied Housing Units: Owner- and Renter-Occupied

The number and percent of occupied housing units which are owned and rented. Owner-occupied housing indicates more stable neighborhoods than places with high levels of renter-occupied housing. Columbia and Boone County have relatively high rates of renters because of the high student populations.

Unemployment: Annual Average Rate

Labor force, employment and unemployment are defined by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The labor force includes people who are employed and those without a job who are actively looking for work and available for work. People who are not working or actively looking for work are not part of the labor force. Labor force and unemployment statistics are based on a survey sent to civilians in the US who are aged 16 and older living outside of institutions. The survey is not sent to people who live in institutions like corrections facilities or nursing homes. The survey is not sent to people on active duty in the Armed Forces.
