Special Education in Boone County
Definition: The number of children with disabilities, as defined by the federal government through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This is an unduplicated count of all children ages three to twenty-one years who have a disability and are provided an education through the public schools. These data are collected on December 1 of every year in every public school district in the United States and is called the "Child Count".
Rationale: These data indicate an unduplicated count of the number of children with disabilities, by school district, and can be identified for every public school district. The students with disabilities are categorized by the following disabilities: mental retardation, hearing impairments (including deafness), speech or language impairments, visual impairments (including blindness), serious emotional disturbance (referred to in this title as `emotional disturbance'), orthopedic impairments, autism, traumatic brain injury, other health impairments, or specific learning disabilities. The data can be used to determine the need for mental health, medical, educational, family support, accessibility, and family support services in each community. This statistic meets most criteria.
